Introduction

Cycling is both my passion and profession. Every day, I find joy in riding my mountain bike through the diverse landscapes of Nepal. While Kathmandu is known for its busy roads, dense traffic, and pollution, there are hidden trails that take you away from the city's chaos and into peaceful countryside settings. Just beyond the Ring Road, the scenery transforms into lush greenery, terraced fields, and quiet rural landscapes. This one-day mountain biking adventure allows you to experience nature, cultural heritage, and the warm hospitality of local communities—all within the Kathmandu Valley.

Setting the Scene

Our journey begins in the early morning after breakfast. We assemble at Freewheel Adventure Nepal's office in Paknajol, where we provide a safety briefing, trail overview, and bike check. Each group will have two experienced guides—one leading at the front and another ensuring no one is left behind. This formation helps us navigate through city traffic safely.

As we leave the city behind and head towards the hilly outskirts of the valley, the air becomes cooler and fresher. The landscape shifts from urban chaos to serene forests and open farmlands. The road is quieter, making the ride enjoyable and refreshing.

The Route & Itinerary

We set off towards Kakani, a beautiful hill station known for its panoramic mountain views. The first section of our ride is a bit busy, but once we cross the Ring Road bypass, the roads become peaceful and shaded by tall trees.

Route Highlights

Paknajol to Mudkhu Bhanjyang

A steady uphill ride through tree-lined roads

First stop: Fulbari Gate for a short break

Continue to Mudkhu Bhanjyang, where we enjoy a cup of refreshing lemon tea at a local tea shop

Optional visit to Osho Tapoban Meditation Center, where you can explore spiritual retreats and meditation practices

Mudkhu to Tokha

Mostly flat trails with stunning views of terraced fields and distant mountains

Some sections of the trail are unpaved, requiring careful riding, especially on descents

Pass through local farms growing seasonal crops

Stop at Tokha, a traditional Newari town, for a local lunch (Dal Bhat - rice, lentils, vegetables, and pickles) or enjoy a packed meal

Return to Kathmandu

Ride back towards the city, passing through rural landscapes before merging into city traffic

End the trip at Freewheel Adventure Nepal's office, where we share experiences over a cup of coffee or tea

Personal Experience & Reflections

Fifteen minutes into the ride, I felt the refreshing breeze of Nagarjun Forest, a stark contrast to the city's dusty air. The tall trees provided shade, and the peaceful atmosphere instantly relaxed me.

Stopping for tea at a local shop, I was greeted by smiling villagers who welcomed us with a heartfelt "Namaste!". Their simple yet warm hospitality touched my heart—it felt like a genuine soul-to-soul connection. Moments like these remind me why I love guiding MTB tours in Nepal.

As we continued riding, the view of Kathmandu Valley unfolded before us. Despite not gaining extreme altitude, the vantage points along the route offered breathtaking scenery, especially on clear-weather days. Visiting ancient Hindu temples along the way added a spiritual touch to the journey, providing insight into Nepal’s rich cultural heritage.

This ride was more than just an adventure—it was a refreshing escape from the city's hustle, an opportunity to embrace nature, and a way to connect with local communities.
