How Difficult is the Lower Mustang (Muktinath) MTB Trip?

The Lower Mustang trip is suitable for both beginner and intermediate cyclists. While the uphill ride from Jomsom to Muktinath is challenging, most of the trip consists of downhill and flat sections, making it an overall easy ride.

Duration:

The trip lasts about 12 days if starting and ending in Kathmandu, with a few days in Kathmandu for sightseeing. If you fly from Pokhara to Kathmandu, the trip can be shortened to 7-8 days.

Best Season:

The best times to go are in Autumn (September to November) and Spring (March to May). The weather is mild, and the views of the Himalayas are spectacular. The trip can be done year-round, but in winter, you will need warm gear. A good raincoat is necessary in the monsoon season (June to August).

Arrive in Kathmandu, where our airport representative will pick you up and transfer you to your

hotel. After checking in, you can walk around Thamel, the vibrant tourist area. In the evening,

there will be a briefing about the trip. Overnight at a medium-standard hotel.

Drive to Pokhara (about 8 hours) or fly (25 minutes). The flight offers stunning views of the

Himalayas. Overnight in a medium-standard hotel.

We’ll take an early morning flight to Jomsom. After assembling our bikes and having breakfast,

we’ll ride to Kagbeni (12 km, about 3 hours). The first part of the route is flat, followed by an

uphill climb. If time permits, you can explore Kagbeni and its monastery. Overnight at a tea

house.

Today’s ride is all uphill, but you’ll be rewarded with views of the Himalayas. We’ll reach

Muktinath, a sacred site for Hindus and Buddhists, and explore the temples and the 108

waterspouts. The ride is about 12 km and takes around 4 hours. Overnight at a tea house.

Today’s ride is mostly downhill, with some flat sections. We can also explore Lubra Valley if

you want a more challenging ride. Marpha is famous for its apple orchards, and the village is

known for its charming alleys. Overnight at a tea house.

This is a long but easy ride with minimal uphill sections. We’ll pass the world’s deepest gorge,

between Annapurna I and Dhaulagiri. We’ll arrive at Tatopani, known for its natural hot springs.

After a refreshing dip, we’ll relax. Overnight at a tea house.

Today’s ride is a short, easy ride to Beni (22 km), after which we’ll drive back to Pokhara. We’ll

spend the evening strolling around Lakeside. Overnight in a medium-standard hotel.

Explore Pokhara with a vehicle or by mountain bike. Visit sights like Phewa Lake, Sarangkot,

and the Peace Pagoda. Overnight in a medium-standard hotel.

We’ll drive or fly back to Kathmandu. Overnight at a medium-standard hotel.

Explore UNESCO World Heritage Sites around Kathmandu Valley. Options include

Swayambhunath, Boudhanath Stupa, and Patan Durbar Square.

We’ll drop you at the airport 3 hours before your flight or assist with extending your stay for

another adventure in Nepal.
