The Annapurna Circuit offers a great variety in terms of altitude and vegetation as it is one of the most popular trekking areas. Mountain biking around the Annapurna circuit is a challenge, fun and has breath taking views. We come across rivers, waterfalls and have stunning views of the Himalayas. You will meet various villagers along the way and hospitable honest hosts that will welcome you to their tea houses. The food they serve is delicious and hygienic. We start our cycling trip from Besisahar, which is reached by vehicle from Pokhara. From the very first day the scenery will be breathtaking and ever changing. Upon reaching Manang we will have a rest day. We can enjoy the scenery and explore the monastery or wander up to a local viewpoint. Once your body is fully acclimatized, we can head onwards towards Thorang La. We recommend you move as slow as possible to prevent altitude sickness. We will need to push and sometimes carry the bike while we ascend to and over Thorang-La, possibly on some of the technical downhill. We will be certain to take our pictures at the top of Thorang-La 5416m. The view is amazing. Going downhill we will need to be careful as there is always a chance of falling off. The trail is very steep, with loose rocks in places. So, we must descend safely, slowly and carefully. From Thorong La we will descend to Muktinath and onto Jomsom. After reaching Muktinath we have the option of riding to Upper Mustang if required. From Mukitnath we can ride the beautiful side trip down the Lupra valley, which will take a detour of Marpha village. We next head towards Beni via Tatopani (hot spring). We have option of a vehicle transfer back from Beni to Kathmandu or ride all the way to Pokhara via Kusma. Or we can ride towards Ghorepani/ Poonhill and ride all the way to Pokhara.

Once back in Pokhara, you have the option of flying back to Kathmandu or transfer back by a private vehicle or tourist bus. We still have more options of exploring Kathmandu valley and surroundings on our return.

The Annapurna circuit on a mountain bike can be completed in a shorter number of days, by using a vehicle to start the ride in to Dharapani and end mountain bike ride in Jomsom or Beni. The only concern is that your body needs time to acclimatize, and some people acclimatize quicker than others. We will always have rest day at Manang on every trip. Evaluating your condition, before deciding to continue upwards and onwards. We always recommend you drink plenty of water, soup and hot drinks.

Highlights:

  • We must cross Throng-La Pass which is 5416m, which on a mountain bike is very adventurous! Some of the trail is particularly difficult to ride so, you will need to push and even carry your bike.
  • Obviously, the first half of our cycling trip goes uphill, but after crossing Thorong La it is downhill all the
  • way, with views of rivers, waterfall and the Himalaya as we descend.
  • Every stop we make for our nights rest is interesting; we can roam around and explore the various villages and interact with the friendly local residents.

Most of the trail around the Annapurna Circuit can be covered by vehicle, but there are sections of single track and particularly steep climbing when ascending Throng La. Even the descent is over difficult and steep terrain requiring you to occasionally walk and even carry your mountain bike requiring strength and good balance. We have a chance to visit Muktinath a religious site for Hindu and Buddhist. Chame, Manang, Muktinath, Jomsom, Marpha are famous villages that we travel through whilst on the Annapurna Circuit.

On arrival just look for our Freewheel Adventure Nepal name plate and your name. Our airport representative will receive you at airport and drop you at your Hotel in Kathmandu. There will be a trip briefing and the opportunity for an evening walk around Thamel.

By mountain bike, we will visit a variety of UNESCO world heritage sites around Kathmandu as part of

our acclimatization and get used to our bikes. Kathmandu is at an altitude of 1335m (4446ft).

We drive to Besisahar by private vehicle, which will take around 7 hours. Our mountain bikes will travel

with us. So, again we can check our bikes and make sure everything is working well. Overnight at

Besisahar.

After breakfast at our hotel, we will cycle through the town of Besishar. The trail slowly winds uphill to

Jagat. You will have views of the Marshyandgi river on your right-hand side. Today is a comparatively

easy day ride, that can be considered a gentle warm up and taste of what is to come! The views of hills

and scenery keep changing as we ride.

Again, today our ride will continue uphill. Slowly you will get used to and acclimatized to the uphill. As

we climb higher up the valley we will encounter waterfalls on both sides of our route.

Slowly we head to Chame, it is the district headquarter of Manang. There are lots of government offices

based here. The views of Himalayas, from today onwards will change and improve every day.

Today is quite interesting, but a long day, if we take the route away from the main track through Nawal

and Gharu. The views on this alternative route, of the Himalayas, are simply amazing. Most of the trail

we follow is uphill, with some fun technical sections. We also cross Humde airport today, before finally

reaching Manang.

Today, we hike up the nearby hill and return to Manag. This is to help with your acclimatization. Later in

the day we can visit the local monasteries and walk around Manang village. Manang village has

everything from coffee shops, bakeries, tea houses and various hotels. It is a good place to stock up on

treats and snacks for the coming days.

As we head towards Tilicho Base Camp, the route is, as usual, uphill. The track is mainly single track,

some sections which are rideable and others that may require you to push your bike. Upon arrival at

Tilcho Base Camp, we can take a walk to explore the area and take in the breath-taking views of nature.

It is simply a wonderful location.

Today’s trail has a mixture of downhill as well as uphill. As the route is mainly single track you have the

option to ride or sometimes push your bike. If you’re riding, you must be very careful as there are loose

rocks, and the trail is steep in places. You’ll experience strong winds in the evening, so remember you’ll

need to wrap up warm to protect you from the chill. Today the ride should be considered quite difficult,

but very rewarding. We spend tonight at Shree Kharka.

Today’s biking trail is of intermediate difficulty. The trail is narrow and has loose mud and rock in places.

This means you may spend quite a lot of time pushing your bike, to conserve your energy and help with

your acclimatization. You must be very careful as you will encounter more trekkers from now on and

there are some steeper sections. Today pushing bike can be the most sensible option. Finally, we must

cross a very long suspension bridge to reach our stay for the night at Phedi.

Today we must climb all the way to and over Thorang La. On the ascent, we will need to push and

sometimes carry our bike. We have no option! After crossing the pass, the trail goes straight down. It is

also steep, so you may be advised to push or carry bike. It is your choice. It goes without saying that we

must be very careful on the descent. The chance of falling off is more likely on the downhill, so a slow

descent and good balance is important. Once we are most of the way down the other side of Thorang La

we will be able to easily ride to our destination for the night, Muktinath.

Almost all the route on this section is paved. We will mostly be descending so, don’t forget to put your

brakes on! We must keep a safe distance between riders and please do not go ahead of your guide.

Before reaching Marpha we will meet Jomsom. Jomosm is the district headquarter of Mustang and it is a

developed town with plenty of hotels, restaurants and government offices. It also has a domestic

airport. Today’s ride is quite short, so we can visit Monasteries and the local houses at Marpha.

From Marpha to Tatopani the mountain biking is technically easy, but a long ride. It is mostly going

downhill, following Kaligandagi river. You will see lots of greenery with the surrounding forests. As we

complete the ride early at Tatopani we have time for a hot spring bath. The hot springs are near our

hotel. We will just need to take a towel, a change of clothes and then take a well-deserved relaxing dip

in the hot springs. It will relax the muscles of our entire body, and it is kind of refreshing natural

massage.

As we cycle further down the valley, we’ll see more greenery and follow the river, Kali Gandgadi. Most

of the trail is inevitably downhill. So, it is an easy ride today. Beni is another large settlement. We can

have a relaxing stroll around and have tea at one of the local tea shops. Today is end of our cycling

adventure around the Annapurna circuit.

After breakfast we’ll load our bike on our support vehicle for the journey back to Pokhara. We’ll check in

to the hotel and enjoy a hot water bath/shower before walking around Pokhara. There is also an option

to boating from the nearby lakeside, if you’re interested.

We have various options for our rest day. We can go to Sarangkot to admire the views of the Himalayas,

best before sunrise or visit the Peace Stupa. We can also take a tour around Pokhara and visit the

Gupteshwor cave, David’s fall, Seti George and many more…

The drive to Kathmandu from Pokhara is 200 km, but road is under construction so, it can take 9 hours

or more depending on traffic. A flight from Pokhara to Kathmandu takes around 25 minutes. The view of

Himalayas from the aircraft is stunning.

Today we can go sightseeing around the Kathmandu valley. We can visit Swayambhunath Stupa,

Boudhnath Stupa, Pashupatinath, Kathmandu Durbar Square (Old Kings Palace) and many more…

This evening is a chance for us to share a have farewell dinner together.

We will ensure you are dropped off at Kathmandu airport 3 hours before your flight. We will say our

goodbyes and wish you a pleasant flight back home or to your other destinations.
