  • Duration10 Days
  • Trip Grade Moderate

Route: Kathmandu; Trishuli; Bhote Padera; Ankhu Hydro; Arughat; Gorkha Bazar; Lamjung; Begnas

Lake; Pokhara. Drive or fly back to Kathmandu.

This is a famous and historic off road cycling route. The accommodation at guest houses is considered simple and basic. The food you get is the Nepalese traditional Dal Bhat, which is Rice, Lentils and Vegetables. You can also choose to have chicken in most of the places. We will be crossing many villages, rivers, forest and farmlands. This trip is for the medium level or advanced cyclist as there is plenty of uphill and downhill riding. These are remote and non-touristic places. Only at the end of our adventure will we return to the tourist city of Pokhara. We can offer these trips using tents and even a backup vehicle, but this will increase the cost. It is a fun experience to camp out in the fresh air and under the stars, but this comes at an extra expense.

Highlights:

  • Experience and explore remote villages
  • Visit lesser-known tourist locations.
  • Travel through farmland and forest scenery.
  • Trishuli and Gorkha town has old King Palaces that are well preserved, which we can visit.
  • We experience many river crossings and splendid viewpoints
  • Pokhara is beautiful, with views of the Himalayas and the surrounding natural resources.

How difficult is Kathmandu-Pokhara MTB Tour?

The route has a few difficult sections. The first section of the ride is quite difficult where you cross Gurge

Bhanjyang and after Tirshuli there is quite a lot of uphill. Aarughat to Gorkha is also pretty much uphill.

Finally, after crossing Sundarbazar on the way to Begnas, is also uphill.

Going downhill is not to be underestimated, as you must control your mountain bike as the roads are

not metaled, so can be rough and loose. So, you may experience pain in your hands and especially your

triceps. After we cross Gorkha it is downhill. Here also we must focus on our riding and be careful, as

there is a chance of falling off. This is due to loose rocks, loose soils and big holes on the downhill, so you

must be careful. Don’t worry though, as our guide will support you.

This trip is of intermediate difficulty. It would help if you were a confident mountain biker/cyclist back

home and you have walked or run almost daily for a month or more before the trip.

Which time of the year is best for your mountain bike adventure from Kathmandu to Pokhara?

Autum and Spring is the most convenient to bike on this trial. The weather is pleasant, and the skies are

clear. The chances of clear views of the Himalayas are higher. Although, we can do this trip throughout

the year, in rainy season we just need a good raincoat and in winter warmer clothing. A warm cap and

gloves are must in winter. Winter is not that cold as you are travelling at a lower altitude and in the mid

hills.

What can you expect on the Kathmandu to Pokhara mountain bike adventure?

Basic accommodation and Nepali meals like Dal Bhat (Rice, lentil and vegetable) is common. You might

get momo and noodles in main towns.

You will see traditional farming. Good views can be seen from the higher hills. Views of the Himalayas

from the viewpoints.

We will meet and greet you at airport and transfer you to your hotel. We will give a briefing about the

trip and take a stroll around Thamel.

We will ride to Trishuli via Gurge Bhanjyang. The ride is quite difficult due to the climb to Gurge

Bhanyang after that, the ride is downhill and mostly flat. We hope to see views of the Himalayas from

the top of Gurge Bhanjyang. In the downhill you need to be slow as the road is narrow. After you reach

the flatlands, the farms are full of greenery. We stop for night at Trishuli Bazar. If you are feeling fit, we

could plan to visit the Nuwakot Durbar (the old Kings Palace).

Today we will have to climb up to Samari before we can start riding on the flat and the downhills.

Compared to yesterday it is an easier day, as you’ll be riding along the ridge with views of the villages

below. As we get nearer to Bhote Padhera we will have to descend a steep downhill. We must be careful

on this downhill, riding slow and cautiously.

Today’s ride is, again, easier compared with the previous day. We ride a trail along the side of the Ankhu

river. The surrounding hills are full of greenery. The trail is mostly flat, but there will be in inevitable

small ups and downs. Today we will be riding across the Salyantar (one of the biggest plateaus of the

Dhading district). We have the options of staying in Dhading or Gorkha tonight.

Aarughat to Gorkha Bazar is steady a steady uphill ride but fortunately interspersed with some downhill

and flat sections too. The uphill is steady, so should be rideable most of the way. If not, you always have

the option of stretching your legs and pushing the bike. You gain altitude today and if we make the ride

on time, we can visit Gorkha Durbar (the old king palace of king of Gorkha).

Early morning we can walk to Gorkha Durbar and visit the site. On a clear day we can see the Himalayas.

Today, our initial ride, is trending downhill and we must be careful and ride cautiously. Then we reach

the flatlands, with the usual ups and downs. Although, most of our trail today is flat, with a final uphill at

the end of the day.

Today our ride is a mixture of steady uphill and flat. We also ride to an orange farm. After riding for a

few hours, we need to climb uphill, before descending downhill to reach Begnas Lake. At Begnas Lake

we can stay and relax here for the rest of the day, to make the trip easier, or we could ride the

remainder of the way to Pokhara.

Pokhara and surrounding is beautiful you can explore yourself. Free day.

We have option of driving or flying back to Kathmandu. With time permitting we can do some more

sightseeing. Overnight at hotel.

We will transfer you to the airport to ensure you arrive there three hours before your flight, or you can

stay longer and take advantage of other trips.
